InformationWeek: Market research firm IDC foresees a day when Microsoft’s Windows will no longer be the dominant operating system. If you lump PCs and mobile devices together, Microsoft Windows accounted for 35.9 percent of the “smart connected devices” market, compared to 29.4 percent for Google’s Android and 14.6 percent for Apple’s iOS. By 2016, IDC forecasts that Android will have 31.1 percent of the market to 25.1 percent for Windows and 17.3 percent for iOS.

“In many if not all instances, the smartphone will be the primary connection to the Internet,” predicted IDC’s Will Stofega.
