LSI Logic Storage Systems this week announced version 8.40 of its SANtricity Storage Manager suite. The Milpitas, CA-based storage systems provider states that existing customers that make the upgrade will benefit from performance boosts of up to 70 percent.
Adding to SANtricity Storage Manager’s feature set is a new volume copy feature. As the name implies, the feature enables the management suite to clone a data volume for diverse tasks such as always-critical backup tasks, applications testing, and even data mining.
Another key option this opens up for admins is the redistribution of data from slower, older drives, for instance, to newer, denser disks for storage consolidation and general upgrade tasks.
The upgraded software also includes a firmware update that results in improved IOPS (input/output per second) performance for transaction-based applications. The upgrade also provides better throughput to applications that put a heavy drain on bandwidth.
In addition to the firmware update and volume copy feature, SANtricity also boasts the following improvements, gleaned from a company release:
- SCSI-3 Persistent Reservations support — enables storage systems from LSI Logic to integrate with multi-node, or cluster solutions, such as Oracle Real Application Cluster and VERITAS Database Edition/Advance Cluster, that use shared volumes for increased data availability, scalability, and performance.
- 256 volumes per partition — allows the storage system to present up to 256 host-addressable Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) to a given host port to provide support for large databases, greater connectivity and capacity for SAN environments, and more room for snapshot and clone volumes.
- Support for more hosts — LSI Logic Storage Systems’ dual-controller 5884 and 4884 systems will now support up to 512 concurrent Fibre Channel logins, enabling more host-to-storage I/O paths for storage consolidation or clustering environments.
