The skiing season has by now descended on Denver, bringing with it the regular influx of weekend tourists and professional ski bums. But there is another influx underway in this city of just over two million people. While clearly not competitive with IT meccas like New York, Silicon Valley, and Los Angeles, the number of tech jobs available in Denver now ofren matches what we see in Dallas, Washington D.C., and San Diego. The only remaining question is this: With an unemployment rate of only 2.4%, where will Denver find the bodies to fill all the new tech positions? Maybe some of those ski bums would be willing to stay the summer.
The top three IT positions in Denver are software engineers, applications programmers/analysts, and managers/project leaders. Not surprisingly, managers and project leaders, who make an average $82,000 per year, are paid more than the city’s other high tech workers. Software engineers make up the largest portion of job openings with 16% of the total, followed by applications programmers/analysts (12%), and managers/project leaders (8%).
Denver had a total of 3,096 listings on dice.com. Data came from available jobs listed during November 2000. Results are based on averages or totals from the following information: salary, job type, job skills, and location.
