Cnet: A new report from NetApplications finds that Microsoft Windows XP accounted for 48.03 percent of the desktop market in October. That’s the first time the ten-year-old operating system has fallen below 50 percent, but it still puts XP at the top of the chart. Coming in second was Windows 7 with 34.62 percent of the market, followed by Windows Vista (8.85 percent), Mac OS X 10.6 (3.62 percent), Mac OS X 10.7 (1.83 percent) and Linux (1.19 percent).

If you group the various versions of the OSes together, Microsoft Windows had 92 percent of the market compared to 7 percent for Apple’s Mac OS X.
