BBC News: Security researchers say that 4.5 million PCs have been infected with the TDL-4 virus in the last three months to become part of a large botnet. And because the virus installs itself in Windows master boot records–an area not usually scanned by security software–the virus usually escapes detection. According to the researchers, “The owners of TDL are essentially trying to create an ‘indestructible’ botnet that is protected against attacks, competitors, and anti-virus companies.”
The researchers report that 28 percent of the infected PCs are in the U.S., with 7 percent in India, 5 percent in the UK and 3 percent in France, Germany and Canada.
