DigiTimes: Chip maker Intel has been promoting “ultrabooks” as an alternative to tablet PCs, but laptop makers are taking a cautious approach to the new form factor. According to sources, Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba and Asustek Computer together will likely produce fewer than 50,000 units to test the market’s response. They will start shipping ultrabooks later this month.
Ultrabooks are thin, light notebook computers with long battery life and instant-on capabilities. Intel says that it remains confident about these new PCs and predicts that they will eventually account for 40 percent of the notebook market.
