PCWorld: CarrierIQ, the company that has been under fire for software that reportedly monitors smartphone users’ activity, has issued a detailed explanation of exactly what its product does and doesn’t do. According to the company, the logging of SMS messages is an unintentional bug that occurs when users receive a text during a call. It also says the software only logs phone numbers and URLs if the carrier asks it to do so, and that it doesn’t capture usernames and passwords.
In addition, CarrierIQ says that the video that started all the hoopla was displaying information obtained from debugging software, and that it wasn’t an accurate picture of what the software actually records on consumer devices.
