Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, delivering what the company claims is the “fastest mobile CPU ever” created alongside AI capabilities.

In the announcement, the firm says your personal data stays on your phone, while the AI adapts to your behavior and preferences.

“With Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, you are at the center of your mobile experience. It enables personalized AI agents to see what you see, hear what you hear and think with you in real time,” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager, mobile handset, Qualcomm Technologies.

According to Qualcomm, the 3rd Gen Qualcomm Oryon CPU boosts performance by 20%. A new Qualcomm Adreno GPU architecture enhances graphics-rich gaming by 23%. While the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU offers 37% faster performance.

Professional video recording

Smartphone cameras have been impressive for years, but the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 also brings the Advanced Professional Video codec. This world-first mobile implementation allows “near-lossless” video quality with full post-production flexibility.

The upgraded camera system supports a 20-bit pipeline with 4x improved dynamic range, 48MP triple cameras, and AI-powered tricks that pull photograph-quality frames from any video moment. With 4K/120fps recording and context-aware auto-focus, auto-exposure, and auto-white balance, your phone starts looking like a legit substitute for pro gear.

This will all be very appealing to content creators and videographers.

The smartphone landscape

Qualcomm says this latest premium offering in the Snapdragon 8 Elite series will be featured in flagship devices from global OEMs and smartphone brands, including Honor, iQOO, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, POCO, realme, REDMI, RedMagic, ROG, Samsung, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE. New devices will be launched in the coming days.

This is an interesting development for intelligent mobile computing. We’re seeing proactive AI that runs entirely on-device and creative tools that once belonged to dedicated hardware.
