Container usage deployment models are leading to the evolution of a new classification of platforms, according to CoreOS CEO Alex Polvi.

Polvi’s company builds a commercially supported technology called Tectonic, that includes the CoreOS Linux operating system, rocket containers and the Kubernetes container management system. The basic idea is to enable a Google-like infrastructure for regular enterprises. In a video interview, Polvi discusses how CoreOS and Tectonic are creating a new class of technology that differs from existing definitions and deployment models like Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) or Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

“There is Infrastructure-as-a-Service and there is Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), then there is this middle category which hasn’t been well defined,” Polvi said. “You can call it containers-as-a-service, cloud native is what the industry is starting to call it.”

Polvi added that it’s a style of infrastructure that is container based, dynamically scheduled and runs on commodity hardware.

“We see Platform-as-a-Service as one view into that style of infrastructure,” Polvi said.
