While many organizations today are considering a move to the cloud, startup Platform9 is offering an innovative approach to enable organizations to use their on-premises infrastructure as a private cloud deployment. Platform9 first emerged from stealth mode in August of 2014 and has been steadily growing ever since.

In a video interview, Sirish Raghuram, co-founder and CEO at Platform9 details what his company is all about and where it is headed.

Cloud Storage and Backup Benefits

Protecting your company’s data is critical. Cloud storage with automated backup is scalable, flexible and provides peace of mind. Cobalt Iron’s enterprise-grade backup and recovery solution is known for its hands-free automation and reliability, at a lower cost. Cloud backup that just works.

“Platform9’s story is we host the OpenStack controller in our infrastructure and it works with a company’s on-premises infrastructure,” Raghuram explained. “The on-premises infrastructure is then transformed by Platform9 into a private cloud managed by OpenStack.”

Raghuram added that the fact that Platform9 hosts the OpenStack controller as a SaaS solution makes it easy and elegant to extend it to other infrastructures, including those that are public. That said he noted that Platform9 doesn’t yet support the public cloud, but that might happen in the future.

Platform9 already is able to support distributed deployments, and Raghuram noted that his company already has customers using the solution across multiple geographies.

“One of our major customers is an adtech company that today is using us to control infrastructure that is in New York, San Francisco and Amsterdam,” Raghuram said.

From a security perspective Raghuram explained that every customer gets their own secure dedicated environment that can be locked down to only be accessible from the customer’s own network.

The big challenge moving forward for Raghuram now is all about raising awareness and scaling the services. He expects further improvements in scale and deeper integration with ActiveDirectory to land in Platform9 in the coming months.
