After what we at InternetNews.com have been through in the last few days, we can sympathize with hiccups like Dell faced recently. A notice on the site sent led to misleading reports that Dell had discontinued selling consumer AMD systems. People searching for AMD products on Dell.com were given the message “Shop for Dell computers […]

For nearly three years, a group of OS/2 supporters has been asking IBM to offer up the source to the long-abandoned operating system. For three years, IBM has said no. Is it finally time to relegate the petition to the same retirement patch as OS/2 itself? The latest rejection from IBM’s legal department came just […]

Sun Microsystems introduced the Blackbox, a portable datacenter in a 20-foot shipping container, amid some hullabaloo in late 2006 and then… nothing. Things got rather quiet, aside from a promotional tour in 2007. But it seems the datacenter-to-go is starting to gain traction. There were individual wins, like the datacenter in Japan that will use […]

Dell is making up for lost time with its late entry into the blades market with an ambitious new design, both in the chassis and blades themselves. The first point Dell wants to make about the PowerEdge M1000e series, unveiled Monday, is that it comes ready to run out of the box. Rather than being […]

AMD’s track record for delays is becoming a real detriment to the company. The latest example is the announcement it plans a reshuffling of its desktop product release schedule, which led to some doom and gloom assessments in the blogosphere, but, according to AMD, is not that big a deal. The company had planned to […]

Security researchers are warning of a new rootkit/code dropper that has the potential to be a lot nastier if its Russian creators ever get motivated. The rootkit infects the Master Boot Record (MBR) (define) of a computer, where it then installs a Trojan to steal online banking information. MBR-based attacks have been around since the […]

Back in his stand-up comic days, Eddie Murphy joked about the newest trend in cars at the time, having them talk to their owner, such as saying the lights were on or the door was open. His car, he said, had an attitude. “Yer lights are on. You deaf and blind? I said your lights […]

Moore’s Law doesn’t just apply to semiconductors, it could rightfully be applied to the rate of innovation in the technology industry. In most cases, that’s a good thing, while in some cases, it’s truly awful. It’s rather sad to see malware writers manage to out-innovate many firms in the Silicon Valley. One wonders what legitimate […]

It seems the errata error found in AMD’s Quad Core Opteron (“Barcelona”) did indeed cause a delay in shipments, forcing the company to revise the design and delay volume shipment from this quarter until Q2 of 2008. Semiconductors are prone to errata errors, which only manifest when the chip is made. They are usually minor […]

Intel’s dominance of the semiconductor sector continues unabated as the chip giant increased its total market share in 2007 to 12.2 percent, well ahead of Samsung, Toshiba and the other chipmakers, according to a report by Gartner. The overall worldwide semiconductor market grew a mere 2.9 percent in revenue to $270.3 billion in 2007, with […]

The threat of rootkits (define) seems to have faded from public consciousness in recent months, with key loggers and Trojans getting most of the attention. However, a survey by Internet security vendor Prevx finds that quite a few PCs are infected with rootkits. Prevx has a free scanner called Prevx CSI that looks for rootkit […]

Adobe Systems today announced it will release the remoting and messaging technologies used in Flex, Flash and other Adobe products as open source projects. Because the technologies are fairly mature, Adobe isn’t so much looking for help from the open source community as it is looking to get its technology into more hands. Adobe intends […]
