VMware is continuing to expand its virtualization and cloud solutions with a series of new product releases announced today at the company’s VMworld Europe event.
On the end-user computing side, VMware announced the acquisition of Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) vendor Desktone. Financial terms of the deal have not been publicly disclosed. Erik Frieberg, VP of product marketing, End-User Computing at VMware explained to Datamation that with the acquisition of Desktone, VMware will be able to further extend the benefits of desktop virtualization to the cloud.
Cloud Storage and Backup Benefits
Protecting your company’s data is critical. Cloud storage with automated backup is scalable, flexible and provides peace of mind. Cobalt Iron’s enterprise-grade backup and recovery solution is known for its hands-free automation and reliability, at a lower cost. Cloud backup that just works.

Frieberg said that one reason that VMware decided to acquire Desktone is because the company has a complete and proven blueprint for enabling service providers to deliver DaaS through its industry-leading technology.
“The combination of Desktone’s service provider base of roughly 40 established and highly reputable providers worldwide with VMware’s network of more than 11,000 VMware service provider partners enables VMware to accelerate the delivery of DaaS much faster than many of our competitors,” Frieberg said. “By bringing Desktone’s platform in house, VMware can accelerate the delivery of DaaS in the marketplace through increased roadmap and go-to-market investment, opening up new opportunities for partners and resellers.”
Horizon
VMware is also expanding on its existing end-user computing efforts with its Horizon Suite. Frieberg explained that VMware Horizon Suite is a combination of new products and packaging of existing products.
The Horizon Suite was first announced in February and is now being expanded. At the time of the original announcement, the Suite included VMware Horizon Workspace, which is an application that combines applications, data and desktops into a single aggregated workspace, securely delivered on any device. The Suite also includes the Horizon View and Horizon Mirage products that work together to transform traditional Windows desktops into a centrally managed service.
“With today’s announcement, VMware is introducing new, innovative enhancements across the entire Horizon Suite to help organizations better support their mobile workforce,” Frieberg said.
vCloud
VMware is also enhancing its vCloud solutions today with the new vCloud Automation Center 6.0 release. David Jasso, group product line marketing manager, IT Business Management at VMware, said that the new application release delivers automation capabilities enabled by the incorporation of vCloud Application Director into the enterprise edition of vCloud Automation Center. The new release also provides a self-service catalog for requesting and managing all types of IT services. There is now also the ability to deploy ‘Anything as a Service’ (or XaaS) such that any custom new service can be rolled out through vCloud Automation Center.
Log Insight
The VMware Log Insight solution that was first announced in June is also getting a boost with a new 1.5 release. Jasso declined to comment on any specific numbers for Log Insight adoption, though he noted that customer adoption of Log Insight continues. Log Insight is a solution intended to help administrators have more visibility into what is going on within their virtual environments.
“Updates to Log Insight 1.5 focus on easing adoption in enterprise environments and enabling rapid time to value,” Jasso said. ” Enhancements have also been made to improve query optimization.”
