As Privacy Concerns Grow, More Social Media Users Are “Unfriending”

All Things D: With privacy-related scandals in the news and government officials expressing concern about the issue, more people, particularly women, are paying attention to their privacy settings on social media sites. A new Pew Research Center report finds that more than 60 percent of users — 67 percent of women and 58 percent of men — have “unfriended” contacts. In addition, the survey found increasing numbers of people keeping their profiles private and taking other steps, such as deleting comments and untagging photos, to manage their social media presence.

However, concerns about privacy aren’t keeping people from accessing social media from their phones. A separate survey from comScore found that 64.2 million Americans access social networks from a smartphone, and at least half do so every day.
