Dell today announced that it has acquired Gale Technologies, an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) specialist, in a bid to heighten the server giant’s profile as a provider of cloud-ready IT systems. The deal’s terms were not disclosed.
“Gale Technologies integrates well with our Active Infrastructure family, and provides an intuitive, flexible and comprehensive foundation for application, virtual desktop infrastructure and private cloud deployments for our customers,” said Marius Haas, president of the Dell Enterprise Solutions Group, in a statement.

The startup’s GaleForce software provides infrastructure automation and orchestration services. Gale takes a vendor-agnostic approach to compute, network and storage resources. The software maker also offers template-based automated provisioning to help administrators get up and running quickly, in as little as 30 minutes boasts the company.
GaleForce’s tech enables data center operators to boost IT utilization, from under 10 percent to over 95 percent, claims the startup.
For Dell, these capabilities will help it better compete in the blistering cloud computing market. ISI analysts Brian Marshall and Stephen Patel wrote in a research note, “In our view, the acquisition reflects the growing importance of automation/management capabilities as enterprises continue to move datacenter workloads to private/hybrid cloud environments.”
Dell is planning to extend its Active System Manager product with Gale’s software in a new offering set to launch early next year. “This new product will provide customers with an IaaS platform for end-to-end automation and orchestration of application, virtual desktop infrastructure and private cloud deployments using VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization technologies,” said Dell.
Dell also announced the formation of a new division called Enterprise Systems & Solutions, which is tasked with developing converged solutions. The unit will be headed by Dario Zamarian, former vice president and general manager of Dell Networking.
