All Things D: A new report from NPD says Apple is the undisputed leader in sales of mobile PCs, a category which includes both tablet and laptop sales. Apple shipped 17.2 million mobile PCs in the first quarter of 2012, enough for a 22.5 percent market share. The number two mobile PC maker, HP, shipped only 8.9 million mobile PCs — an 11.6 percent market share. Rounding out the top five were Acer, Lenovo and Dell.

The iPad contributed heavily to Apple’s ranking; 13.6 million of its 17.2 million mobile PCs shipped were iPads. Not surprisingly, NPD also ranked Apple as the top tablet manufacturer, followed by Samsung, Amazon, RIM and Asus, in that order.
