Computerworld: According to a new IDC report, the two most popular mobile operating systems, Android and iOS, accounted for 82 percent of smartphone shipments in the first quarter. Google’s Android captured 59 percent of the market, while Apple’s iPhone had a 23 percent market share. BlackBerry continued its “downward trajectory,” falling 30 percent from the previous year to a 6.4 percent market share. Nokia’s Symbian had 6.8 percent of shipments, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone and Windows Mobile together had just 2.2 percent of the market.

The report said that BlackBerry and Windows Phone must attract more app developers if the platforms are to survive. “Developer intentions of enthusiasm for a particular operating system is typically a leading indicator of hardware sales success,” said IDC’s Kevin Restivo.
