Data warehouses today are an important strategic aid in product development and customer analysis. The number of jobs available to data warehousing professionals has increased, as have their salaries and contract rates. According to dice.com, EarthWeb's online job board for IT professionals, data warehousing pros were offered an average salary of $87,000 per year in July 2000, and an average contract rate of $71 per hour. The lowest salaries came in at around $50,000 per year; and at the other end of the spectrum, senior data warehousing pros could bring down as much as $175,000.

Averages are based on 281 listings for these professionals, with cities bearing fewer than 10 listings excluded from mention. Dallas has the greatest demand among metro areas for this type of worker, with 16% of all listings. Salaried data warehousing pros in New York are packing heavier wallets than their peers elsewhere, making on average $96,500 per year. However, the highest average contract wage offerings are in Chicago, at $92 per hour--an uncommonly high ranking for the windy city, which is also fifth highest on the salary list.
