Nimbula, founded by original Amazon EC team members, bills itself as a "cloud operating system company." The startup's Nimbula Director software provides private cloud management, multi-tenancy and self-service provisioning. By partnering with MapR, a company that offers an enterprise-flavored distribution of Apache Hadoop, the company is hoping to lure customers with the prospect of getting the ball rolling on Big Data projects within mere minutes.
According to the companies, organizations can deploy Hadoop clusters in under two minutes using the combined solution. MapR's software provides Hadoop services, automation and management while Nimbula Director establishes a multi-tenant, self-service pool of compute and storage.
Together, the solution, which includes templates, recipes and verification tests for running Hadoop on the Nimbula platform, makes an ideal and highly-available test bed and development platform for Hadoop-based apps, say the companies.
Another suitable use case: mixed-use environments. According to the software makers, the bundled offering makes it possible to pursue a "follow the moon computing" strategy by operating "Hadoop and non-Hadoop workloads on the same pool of hardware."
Other benefits include a self-service approach to launching Hadoop clusters on a private cloud without the need to requisition more hardware. IT shops can also operate their Hadoop clusters in lights-out data centers, "with automated re-provisioning of failed nodes and a no-NameNode architecture."
All told, Nimbula and MapR are hoping their focus on leveraging affordable infrastructure for Big Data processing will resonate with customers.
"With this solution, customers can have the best of two worlds," says Nimbula's Jay Judkowitz, director of product marketing. He adds, "They can have big data processing from Hadoop with private cloud's ability to deliver low cost shared infrastructure that manages elastic demand between multiple tenants."
