Bottom Line

As the cloud computing era has gained steamed, VMware’s traditional focus on the in-house data center hasn’t worked in its favor. Still, VMware remains one of the biggest enterprise players, with plenty of capabilities, so its cloud migration tools are a viable option for a key customer segment.

Cloud Storage and Backup Benefits

Protecting your company’s data is critical. Cloud storage with automated backup is scalable, flexible and provides peace of mind. Cobalt Iron’s enterprise-grade backup and recovery solution is known for its hands-free automation and reliability, at a lower cost. Cloud backup that just works.

That segment: VMware’s cloud migration capabilities are best suited for enterprises that use its virtualization and other software in their data centers and want to set up a hybrid cloud. If you’re already a VMware customer, add cloud migration to the workload makes sense.

However, at this point VMware’s cloud migration tools are somewhat disjointed. On the upside, it has recently acquired CloudVelox and CloudHealth Technologies, which give it more comprehensive cloud migration capabilities. These acquisitions may allow VMware to create a more integrated migration and management platform that works well for many more cloud platforms.

Company Description

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018, VMware is the world’s leading virtualization company and offers a wide variety of products and services related to cloud computing. In the second quarter of its fiscal 2019, the company reported revenue of $2.17 billion, a 13 percent year-over-year increase. It is a subsidiary of Dell Technologies but is publicly traded on its own on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol VMW. Dell is currently in the process of purchasing a separate VMware tracking stock traded as DVMT. VMware has its headquarters in Palo Alto, California, with offices in six other states and 20 other countries around the globe.

VMware has made numerous acquisitions over its two decades of existence, and in 2018 it purchased two different companies that directly impacted it cloud migration capabilities: CloudVelox and CloudHealth Technologies.

VMware customers include ADP, Adobe, IHS Markit, Make-A-Wish, Trend Micro, Saber Healthcare, Fujitsu, Brooks Brothers, T-Mobile, Ford Motor Company, Guardian Life, the state of Louisiana, the British Army, Accenture and many others.

Product Description

VMware offers several different products with cloud migration capabilities, and nearly all are focused on supporting hybrid cloud environments. They include VMware Cloud on AWS, VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud, Hybrid Cloud Extension, Network Insight and Cloud Foundation. However, some of its most comprehensive cloud migration capabilities are available through CloudHealth Technologies, which it recently acquired. CloudHealth offers workload discovery, planning, modeling, assessment, optimization and calculating the total cost of ownership (TCO) for cloud migrations.
