Computerworld: Microsoft is celebrating the success of its efforts to get people to upgrade their browsers. Fewer than 1 percent of U.S. Internet users accessed the Web via Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) in December, a record low since the browser’s debut in 2001. In honor of the news, Microsoft posted a photo of a cake which read “HTML 5 Goodbye IE6!”

“IE6 has been the punch line of browser jokes for a while, and we’ve been as eager as anyone to see it go away,” said Microsoft’s Roger Capriotti.

While Microsoft may have been successful in getting U.S. users weaned off the aging browser, it still has work to do in China, where one in four PCs run IE6.
