ZDNet: The HP v. Oracle trial regarding support for the Itanium server platform begins today. The highly contentious dispute between the two former partners has frequently been compared to divorce proceedings. At issue is Oracle’s decision to drop support for HP’s Itanium-based servers. HP claims that when former CEO Mark Hurd went to work for Oracle, the two companies reached an agreement that required Oracle to continue supporting Itanium.

In the first phase of the trial, a judge will determine if a contract actually did exist between the two companies. If so, then a second phase of the trial will begin, with a jury determining whether Oracle breached that contract.
