4 in 10 U.S. Phones Are Now Smartphones

GigaOm: The latest report from Nielsen finds that 40 percent of all mobile phones in the U.S. are smartphones, up from 38 percent for the quarter ending in May. At this rate, the majority of mobile phones will be smartphones by sometime in 2012.

The company also reports that Android continues to be the most popular mobile operating system with 40 percent of the market. It is followed by iOS (28 percent), BlackBerry (19 percent) and Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile (8 percent).
