Emissions from Microsoft, Dell Data Centers Worry Residents

Quincy, Washington, residents are concerned about pollution from the diesel backup generators being installed at local data centers.

Computerworld: Because of its low electricity costs, Quincy, Washington, has long been a favorite location for data centers. However, local residents in the town of 6,000 are now growing concerned about pollution from the diesel backup generators used by the data centers. Dell has filed for permission to add 28 new generators, which would bring the total in the town to 141 generators.

The Washington State Department of Ecology met with those concerned about the issue at a public meeting July 13, and it will accept written comments until July 18.
