InformationWeek: According to market research firm Gartner, Android captured 52.5 percent of the mobile operating system market in the third quarter. That means Google’s platform has more users than all the other smartphone platforms combined. It’s particularly striking because Android has made most of those gains in a single year; in last year’s third quarter, Android had just 25.3 percent of the market.

Much of Android’s gain came at Symbian’s expense, as Symbian dropped from 36.3 percent to 16.9 percent of the smartphone market. Windows Phone fell from 2.7 percent last year to just 1.5 percent this year. Apple’s iOS also dropped slightly, from 16.6 percent to 15 percent.
