In September of this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that iPhone and iPad owners have downloaded more than 140 billion apps from the company's App Store. "The App Store has forever changed the world of software and forever has changed all of our lives," he said.

The App Store now includes more than 2 million apps, including more than half a million games. That's good news for the developers who have earned more than $50 billion from the App Store. But for end users, it's a mixed bag: on the one hand, they have plenty of apps to choose from; on the other, it's getting harder than ever to find the really good apps.

In this slideshow, were featuring 12 cool iPhone apps that are worth a look. These aren't the apps that everyone has, like Facebook, Pandora, Candy Crush, and Pokémon Go. These are slightly less well-known (but still very popular) apps that tend to have high ratings. While they're from popular categories, they're all just a little bit unusual. Most importantly, we think that you'll like them and these cool iPhone apps are at least worth trying out even if you don't use them all the time.
