VMware CEO Alludes to Looming Virtualization Licensing Changes

Its CEO says the virtualization provider may be moving towards consumption-based pricing.

InfoWorld: At the recent VMworld Europe event, VMware CEO Paul Maritz said the company's licensing model could soon be changing. "We are going to have to move toward more of a consumption-based model. This is where we are going," said Maritz. "We are trying to keep the licensing stable for as long as we can, but in 10 years from now, things will have changed quite radically."

Currently, most companies pay licenses to VMware based on their CPUs. However, improvements in server technology mean that companies have been putting more and more virtual machines on every physical server.
