U.S. Probes Cyber Attack on Water System

Russian hackers destroyed a pump in an Illinois water system.

Reuters: In what could be the first known foreign cyberattack on U.S. critical infrastructure, Russian hackers shut down a pump in an Illinois water system earlier this month. According to a one-page report from the Illinois Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center, the hackers used stolen credentials to access the rural water system's control software on November 8. One of the system's pumps later burned out, presumably due to the attack.

The FBI and Department of Homeland security are investigating the incident. "At this time there is no credible corroborated data that indicates a risk to critical infrastructure entities or a threat to public safety," said DHS spokesman Peter Boogaard.
