Samsung Tops Handsets With 40% Android Share, Gartner Says

Mobile phone sales declined 2 percent in the most recent quarter.

Bloomberg: A new report from market research firm Gartner says that Samsung overtook Nokia as the number one mobile phone manufacturer during the first quarter of the year. The Korean firm made 40 percent of all Android smartphones sold during the period. According to Gartner, 56 percent of all smartphones sold run the Android OS, more than twice as many as run Apple's iOS.

Overall, mobile phone sales decreased 2 percent in the first quarter, primarily because fewer people were buying low-cost feature phones. The sharp declines in feature phone sales were offset by a 45 percent increase in smartphone sales.
