Pentagon Extends Program to Defend Cyber Networks

The Defense Department will work to harden the network security of its contractors.

AP/ABCNews: The U.S. Department of Defense has announced that it will extend through mid-November a program aimed at securing the networks of defense contractors. Currently, the pilot program includes 20 different businesses, and government officials hope to grow the program to include more companies. "The results this far are very promising," said deputy secretary of defense William Lynn.

The news comes as the number of intrusions into defense contractors' networks grows. In fact, examining such intrusions now accounts for about 30 percent of the Pentagon's Cyber Crime Center's workload.
