InformationWeek: In an attempt to revive interest in the Sun line of servers and attract former HP Itanium users, Oracle has unveiled a new line of servers based on the Sparc T4 chip. According to the company, the new chip is five times faster than the T3; CEO Larry Ellison called it “a gigantic step forward in single-thread performance.” Oracle also claims the new Sparc T4-4 server offers 33 percent better price/performance than the IBM Power 780 server and 2.6 times better price/performance than HP’s Superdome 2 Itanium servers.
“This is a tremendous evolution for Sparc, and it’s going to be a big appeal to the installed base,” said Forrester analyst Richard Fichera. “That’s the most critical thing they need to do, because they’re dead if they can’t capture that refresh business.”
Oracle server sales slumped 32 percent in 2010, and declines have continued this year.
