IBM Debuts Lower-Cost $75,000 Mainframe

The IBM zEnterprise 114 will enable hybrid computing and promote server consolidation.

InformationWeek: IBM is debuting a new mainframe that costs just $75,000, 25 percent less than its previous model. The zEnterprise 114 has fewer cores than its predecessor, but still includes the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX) feature which offers high-speed connections to a blade server.

According to the company, the 114 will support hybrid computing -- in other words, it can run both BM's zOS and zLinux operating systems. They also say the new system will allow them to reach a wider market and that it will enable greater server consolidation.
