Computerworld: Over the next few weeks, Google will be transitioning to make secure search the default for logged in users. The service uses SSL encryption to protect the content of Web searches. The SSL security will be present on most searches, but not on maps. Users who are not logged in can access the secure search service through a link.

Google says that search speed may be slightly lower when using the SSL encryption.
