Facebook Is Said to Buy 750 IBM Patents

The social networking giant is building its patent portfolio as a defense against lawsuits.

Bloomberg: Unnamed sources say that Facebook has purchased 750 patents from IBM. The social networking giant is the target of a high-profile patent lawsuit filed by Yahoo and said in its IPO filing, "We expect the number of patent and other intellectual property claims against us to grow." Building up its arsenal of patents is one way to defend itself against patent infringement lawsuits filed by rivals.

Currently, Facebook owns just over 50 U.S. patents and has filed applications for 503 more. IBM has received more patents than any other company for 19 years in a row; last year alone, the company received 6,180 new patents.
