Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal: Reports say that Cisco will be working with the Chinese government to create a new system of 500 networked surveillance cameras in the city of Chongqing. The "Peaceful Chongqing" project will monitor a 400-square-mile area of the city. Officials say the project will be used to fight crime, but human rights activists worry that the system will be used for more nefarious purposes.

Since the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, the U.S. has banned companies from exporting crime control products to China, but Cisco's equipment is acceptable under a loophole in the ban.
