BlackBerry Service Issues Spread to U.S. and Canada

The smartphone maker blames the outage on a faulty backup switch.

Cnet: A BlackBerry service outage that began in Europe, the Middle East and Africa on Monday spread to South and North America on Tuesday. U.S. users have been complaining that e-mail has been delayed and delivered in batches.

BlackBerry maker RIM blamed the original outage on a faulty backup switch. "Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested," said a company statement. "As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and we will continue to keep you informed."
