The Inquirer: On the seventeenth anniversary of its initial Web server launch, the Apache Foundation has released version 2.4 of the Apache Web Server. This is the first major update of the open source project in six years. Version 2.4 boasts lower memory usage, better concurrency and better performance in high-performance environments. According to Apache's Eric Covener, "This release delivers a host of evolutionary enhancements throughout the server that our users, administrators, and developers will welcome. We've added many new modules in this release, as well as broadened the capability and flexibility of existing features."

The Apache Web Server runs an estimated 400 million websites, making it the most popular Web server in existence.
