Reuters: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has released some details about who was willing to pay $185,000 for the chance to run a new top-level domain. Almost half of the 1,930 applications came from North America, with Google and Yahoo each applying for dozens of domains, like .cloud, .buy and .book. “The big names of the Internet have either invested massively or not at all,” noted Melbourne IT’s Stuart Durham. “There appear to be no applications from Facebook or Twitter.”

ICANN received duplicate applications for 231 domain names, including .app (13 bids), .home (11 bids), and .inc (12 bids). If ICANN determines that more than one group has a legitimate claim to a domain name, it will auction off the domain to the highest bidder.
