CIO: A team from Microsoft and the Dutch Katholieke Universiteit Leuven have developed a new technique for breaking the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), the encryption algorithm used to secure nearly all online transactions and wireless communications. This new technique is three to five times faster than previous methods of compromising AES, but it would still require billions of years of computer time.

Because the code-breaking technique is so complex, the researchers say it is unlikely to be used by hackers using today's technology.
