Network engineers are offered an average salary of $80,500 per year and an average contract rate of $69 per hour, according to dice.com, EarthWeb's online job board for IT professionals. Highest salaries range from $175,000 to $200,000 per year, and the lowest positions pay around $30,000.

Salaries are highest in Silicon Valley, at $90,500 on average, but these pros are paid well across the board, with 8 of 10 metro areas surveyed offering average salaries of at least $70,000 per year. Hourly contract rates in New York, at $98, are highest among metro areas. The highest concentration of job openings is in Silicon Valley, which has 23% of all listings for network engineers. Other cities with many open jobs for network engineers include New York (16%) and Los Angeles (12%).
