Santa Cruz, Calif.-based Evans Data Corp. recently released a survey that shows a 75% increase in XML use among Linux developers over the last six months. More than 28% of respondents are using XML today, compared with only 16% last spring. It’s only one of a number of recent studies and surveys indicating that XML has transitioned from an object of hype and forecasting to a popular and increasingly well-implemented tool for e-commerce.

The maturing of XML has also manifested in the IT labor market. In August 2000, the average overall salary for XML professionals was $86,000 per year, and contract rates averaged $76 per hour, according to dice.com, EarthWeb’s online job board for IT professionals. Silicon Valley, Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta all have a large demand for XML skills. The highest average salaries, at $106,000 per year, were in Silicon Valley, and the highest contract rates, at $108 per hour, were in New York.

Averages are based on 184 positions listed, with cities bearing fewer than 10 listings excluded from mention. Data came from available jobs listed during August 2000 on dice.com. Results are based on averages or totals from the following information: salary, job type, job skills, and location.
