PHP professionals

PHP is a scripting language used to extract data from a database for presentation on a Web page. The major NT and UNIX Web servers support the language, and it is widely used with the mSQL database. Demand for IT professionals with PHP skills has recently increased. This is largely because PHP is used on approximately 23% of Apache servers, and it has therefore experienced a piggy-back growth in use in proportion to Apache's escalating popularity.

In June 2000, employers were offering PHP professionals an average salary of $77,000 per year and an average contract rate of $63 per hour, according to dice.com, Datamation's sister site and an online job board for IT professionals. Results are based on 123 listings for this type of professional. Silicon Valley had more availabilities for this job type than other regions, with 28% of the overall demand. The highest salaries were in San Francisco, where PHP pros made $91,000 per year on average. Contract rates were highest in Silicon Valley, averaging $98 per hour.
