IDC: According to the latest data from IDC, 18.2 percent of all new servers shipped in the fourth quarter of 2009 were virtualized, up from 15.2 percent in the preceding year. However, total virtualized shipments for the entire year decreased 5 percent from the year before.
The research firm says that enterprises are adopting a "virtualize first" mentality as they prepare for cloud computing. "The recovery in server spending is being led by x86 systems where virtualization continues to remain a top priority," said IDC's Matt Eastwood. "IDC sees virtualization as a critical evolutionary step in the journey to the private cloud.
