Worldwide Server Market Rebounds Sharply in Fourth Quarter

Demand for blades and x86 servers pushed shipments up 1.9 percent compared to the previous year.

IDC: Although the server market numbers for 2009 look bleak, the fourth quarter figures had some bright spots. For the year, server revenue was down 18.9 percent to $43.2 billion, compared to 2008. However, the fourth quarter was the second quarter in a row for quarter-over-quarter improvements in server shipments, with a 1.9 percent increase.

"Market conditions improved significantly in the fourth quarter as the marketplace transitioned from recent stability to growth in several critical server segments. Customers are actively re-evaluating their IT needs and refreshing their infrastructures, and the fourth quarter represents the beginning of a market inflection," said IDC's Matt Eastwood.
