IDC Identifies Four Major Trends Reshaping the Worldwide Mobile Landscape

IDC says that the mobile market is in transition and highlights the trends that will most affect the industry this year.

IDC: The global mobile telecom market is worth $850 billion, and it's growing quickly. In 2010, IDC believes several trends will impact the industry:

  • As mobile voice growth slows, applications will become more important for revenue generation.
  • Smartphones will play a larger role.
  • New operating systems will offer users more choices.
  • Mobile broadband will be the focus for infrastructure providers.

"The mobile sector is in transition from its prior focus on subscriber growth. The expanding demographics of smartphones and new operating systems, the arrival of mobile broadband, and the explosive growth of applications and content are combining to reshape the landscape of mobile telecommunications," said Courtney Munroe, group vice president of Worldwide Telecommunications at IDC.
