Linux professionals, see how much demand there is for your skills, and find out what you can command for salaries and contract rates.

Linux professionals

We began our four-week series of salary surveys on open source applications last week with a look at Apache server professional positions. This week we focus on Linux, the darling of operating system dissidents everywhere. Sure, there are open source applications with more available jobs (Perl). And yes, there are open source jobs that pay better (Sendmail). But Linux is, well, Linux. It's the original open source pioneer and everyone's favorite underdog.

And there is plenty to mention about Linux. When we last checked the number of available Linux jobs on dice.com, an Internet-based job board for IT professionals, in September 1999, we found 150 listed nationwide. Currently dice contains a whopping 543 jobs, an increase of over 200%; an expansion roughly on par with the overall increase in open source availabilities. Nationwide, the average Linux salary is $77,000, with San Francisco topping the chart at $84,000. The highest contract wage is in Trenton, N.J.--if you can believe it--where Linux pros command $95 an hour. Specifically, among all Linux job types, systems administrators are most in demand, with 151 job openings listed.
