There are plenty of excellent database programs out there that are sufficiently fast for 95% of business functions. Some of them even rival Oracle8i in certain areas. IBM’s DB2, for example, is a generally acknowledged leader in scalability. However Oracle is the de facto champion in high-powered database technology. Oracle8i‘s advanced features–including large database partitioning, bitmapped indexes, and summary tables–makes it the automatic choice for companies seeking power and flexibility from database technology.

Therefore, it comes as no great shock to find that database administrators familiar with Oracle are in high demand these days. Dice.com, our sister site and an Internet job board for IT professionals, contained 1,601 job openings for this type of IT pro in March 2000, with an average salary of $80,000 per year and an average contract rate of $76 per hour. One hundred ninety of the positions were for senior-level positions. Salaries offered in New York, at an average of $92,500 per year, were higher than those in other cities, while the highest contract rates listed on dice.com could be found in San Francisco, where the average was $99 per hour.

Data came from available jobs listed during March 2000 at dice.com, but the results don’t necessarily indicate the actual number of positions available regionally or nationwide. Results are based on averages or totals from the following information on dice.com: salary, job type, job skills, and location. Zach Rodgers
