Wall Street Journal: Beginning Monday, the U.S. Army will begin desert tests of iPhones, Android smartphones and tablet PCs to see if they could withstand the rigors of combat. They'll also be testing around 85 apps that would give troops access to the information they need on the front lines.

So far, the Army has spent approximately $4.2 million investigating smartphones and developing apps.
