Google's Latest Data Center Is Cooled Entirely With Ocean Water

Business Insider: In most data centers, the energy needed to cool the facility and the equipment is the largest operating expense. However, Google's new data center in Hamina, Finland, sidesteps that problem by cooling the building with sea water.

The facility, which used to be a paper mill, sucks in ocean water through granite tunnels, runs it through pipes and heat exchangers, and then mixes it with cool water again before dumping it back into the ocean. As a result, the building needs no traditional air conditioning system.
