Microsoft Buys Skype for $8.5 Billion

The deal is Microsoft's most expensive purchase ever.

LA Times: Microsoft has made its biggest purchase ever--the software giant will buy Web video conferencing service Skype for $8.5 billion in an all-cash deal. Skype's current owners, an investment group, bought the company from eBay in 2009 for just over $2 billion.

In a joint statement, the companies said, "The combination will extend Skype's world-class brand and the reach of its networked platform, while enhancing Microsoft's existing portfolio of real-time communications products and services."
