InformationWeek: When the Navy Seals and CIA paramilitary operatives stormed Osama bin Laden's compound, they found 100 thumb drives, DVDs and computer disks, along with 10 computer hard drives and 5 computers. Now forensics experts are working to recover the data from those devices using a variety of techniques. The work likely started on-site--if bin Laden's computers were running at the time of the raid, it would have been easier to recover data from them.
Experts say that in addition to the data included on the thumb drives, the thumb drives themselves could provide useful information about the operation of the Al Qaeda courier networks. That's because each thumb drive has a unique serial number that is stored in every device that drive ever plugs into.
